John is a mechanical engineer, with a Master’s degree in environmental engineering. He is the director of engineering and Managing Director at Ecological Design – a company that provides detailed assessments of the energy & water efficiency of proposed designs.
He drinks Home Brew! Truly walks the walk… When he isn’t brewing his own ale, he can be found sailing and bike riding. Runs his house, in the middle of Newtown, is run on rainwater and his 4WD is on Biodiesel.
Brings engineering it all his roles – even as a landscaper he was designing a water tank sizing system. To be able to give that level of detail is excellent to make sure you can adequately harvest the rainfall.
Growing up in a country town, he didn’t have the role models. Something practical – engineering – seemed like a good idea.
First role was as a mechanical engineer at AWA, working on a betting machine project that failed. Then moved into traffic engineering, from a mechanical engineering perspective.
Hot Topic discussion
Climate change, engineering has caused it, but it is also needed to resolve it.
Renewable power sources, batteries etc.. That will be what can assist with solving the issue of climate change.
The national rollout of BASIX really unified councils on action on climate change.
Most people want to do something, but cost is seen as being prohibitive. So they will do the bare minimum.
Climate change is the big thing we’ve got to come to terms with, and it’s going to take a lot of engineering.
To get us away from fossil fuel, it’s going to need a lot of engineering
During this podcast, you will also reflect on:
Really enjoyed working on a water development where water was to be treated by a reed bed. Had to do a water balance model which was an enjoyable challenge. Especially when the records show a day of 750ml of rainfall in a single day!
There’s lot of work in the future for engineers in this environmental space
engineering, it’s almost like a gateway to whatever else it is you want to do ….. it opens so many doors.
An engineering item for discussion. The electric bicycle. The bicycle is the most efficient to anything out there. And when married to with a small compact efficient and electric motor with a battery, you’ve got something that can get people around with very little impact on the planet and it encourages interaction with the community and society.
An engineer to admire.Have admired John Bradfield for his vision. “He had big plans in terms of our rail network.”
